Getting fired creates a strange kind of silence.
For months or even years, your days may have been filled with meetings, deadlines, emails, office politics, and the constant pressure of what needed to happen next. Your attention was always directed outward—toward your boss, your coworkers, your customers, your calendar, and your responsibilities.
Then suddenly, it stops.
At first, that silence can feel terrifying. The familiar structure of your life is gone. There is no meeting to prepare for, no inbox demanding your attention, and no Monday morning routine waiting for you.
But there is a paradox hidden inside that emptiness.
The void that follows getting fired can create an opening to hear what your soul has been trying to tell you all along.
I call those messages Divine Whispers.
What Is a Divine Whisper?
You may call it intuition, inner guidance, instinct, God, the Universe, Source, or simply a deep knowing. The language matters less than your willingness to listen.
A Divine Whisper may present in the form of a quiet thought you can’t quite shake or persistent curiosity or an unexpected opportunity. A person who enters your life at exactly the right moment.
Sometimes it’s simply a feeling:
I should call that person.
I keep thinking about starting my own business.
I’ve always wanted to do that.
Something about this opportunity feels right.
Or perhaps:
I know I don’t want to go back to the life I had before.
The whispers may have been there all along
You may simply have been too busy to hear them.
How Divine Whispers Actually Show Up
Divine Whispers can appear in surprisingly ordinary ways.
You have a random conversation with someone who mysteriously addresses a question you’ve been asking yourself privately.
You meet someone unexpectedly who introduces you to a person, idea, career, or opportunity you had never considered.
A book falls into your hands. You hear a podcast. You read an article. A sentence stops you in your tracks because it seems as though it was written specifically for you.
You notice that the same idea keeps appearing in different places.
It is easy to dismiss these moments as coincidences. And sometimes they may be.
But instead of immediately dismissing them, become curious.
Ask yourself: Why did this get my attention?
That question alone can reveal something important.
The Difference Between Guidance and Fear
Learning to hear your inner guidance doesn’t mean every thought deserves to be followed.
Fear is loud.
Fear says:
You need another job immediately.
You can’t afford to take a risk.
Be practical.
What will people think?
What if you fail?
Divine Whispers tend to be quieter. They often point toward what feels true.
After a job loss, you may be tempted to fill the silence as quickly as possible. Send more résumés. Make more calls. Find another job. Get back to normal.
But what if returning to “normal” isn’t the invitation?
What if the interruption is giving you an opportunity to discover something different?
Create Space to Hear
You don’t have to sit silently for hours waiting for a mystical revelation.
Simply begin creating small spaces where your inner voice has a chance to surface.
Take a walk without your phone. Journal in the morning. Sit quietly with a cup of coffee before opening your email. Spend time in nature. Pray. Meditate. Drive without turning on the radio.
Most importantly, resist the urge to immediately solve every uncomfortable feeling.
Sometimes clarity needs room to arrive.
Begin noticing what repeatedly captures your attention. What conversations energize you? What ideas keep returning? What kind of work are you curious about? Who keeps showing up? What opportunities seem to appear without your forcing them?
And perhaps the most revealing question of all:
What have you known for a long time but haven’t been willing to admit?
Listen Before You Leap
A Divine Whisper doesn’t necessarily require a dramatic response.
Take one small step.
Make the phone call.
Research the idea.
Have the conversation.
Take the class.
Meet the person.
Write down what you’re noticing.
Then pay attention to what happens next.
Guidance often unfolds one step at a time. You don’t need to see the entire road. You simply need enough clarity to recognize the next turn.
The Gift Hidden in the Silence
Getting fired may have taken away your title, your routine, your paycheck, and your certainty about what comes next.
But for the first time in a very long time, it may also have given you something extraordinarily valuable:
Space.
Space to question.
Space to remember.
Space to imagine.
Space to listen.
The silence that initially feels like emptiness may not be empty at all.
It may be the place where you finally begin hearing the quiet guidance that was impossible to hear over the noise of the life you were living.
So before you rush to fill the void, spend some time listening.
The whispers may have already begun.
